Secret service regulators to exchange more data

The supervisory authorities for the intelligence services of the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, and Norway have published a statement online indicating that they will be exchanging more data.

It proved difficult to effectively discuss which data the intelligence services exchanged without permission to share that data. The supervisory authorities see solutions in, among other things, automated monitoring of data exchange by intelligence services via IT systems. It is still unclear exactly how this will work. The joint statement states that more knowledge is needed about the functioning of the internal systems to make this possible.

More intensive cooperation is needed because intelligence services are increasingly exchanging data in bulk. Monitoring this is becoming increasingly difficult due to the increase in the number of exchanges. The regulators do not want all rules surrounding the confidentiality of national data to be thrown out, they say. The combination of the five countries is notable because Switzerland and Norway are members, two countries that are not members of the European Union.
